TOGETHER FOR CARIBOU
Mountain caribou are spiraling towards extinction. Many herds have disappeared and several are declining at an alarming rate.
The measures currently in place to protect and restore habitat, reduce predation and mitigate the effects of human disturbance are not effective enough to prevent the extinction of the most vulnerable populations.
Conservation breeding and maternity penning programs are urgently needed. Whether they increase calf survival or create an insurance population to reinforce declining herds or reintroduce extinct herds, both can boost caribou recovery in ways that habitat conservation measures alone can’t.
Caribou recovery is only possible if we all work together and if all wildlife conservation tools are considered. The Caribou Conservation Alliance unites caribou conservationists and promotes the integration of ex situ tools (in human care) with in situ (in the wild) caribou recovery initiatives.
