A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR CARIBOU

Woodland caribou, one of North America’s most iconic species, are spiralling towards extinction. The challenges they face are growing and many populations are dwindling towards extirpation. Habitat protection and restoration measures, while key to the recovery of caribou, are not effective enough in the short term to reverse population declines and preserve the most vulnerable populations.

Conservation breeding can support caribou recovery by conserving individuals from non-viable herds and reinforcing viable herds. It also opens the possibility of future reintroduction to historic range, assuming the factors that have led to the extirpation of the herd are corrected.

THREATS TO CARIBOU

Mountain caribou depend on vast uninterrupted old-growth forests for food, shelter and seasonal migration. Human-induced habitat alteration and climate change is challenging their survival. Learn more about the threats caribou are facing.

CONSERVATION BREEDING

Many species, including scimitar-horned oryxArabian oryx, addax, milu and Przewalski’s horses, were brought back from the brink of extinction through conservation breeding. Learn how breeding endangered animals under controlled conditions can preserve species.
